Review and Analysis of the Highly Rated Chrome Extension: WordPress Debug (WP Debug)

Chrome extensions have revolutionized how users interact with the web, creating a more efficient and enjoyable browsing experience. Among the top Chrome extensions , one that garners a high aggregate rating and considerable user attention is the WordPress Debug ( WP Debug ) tool. This utility tool is an essential browser tool for developers, offering unique features that make debugging a breeze.

Outstanding Features of WordPress Debug (WP Debug)

WordPress Debug (WP Debug) is a Chrome extension designed for debugging server-side applications, making use of the browser's JavaScript console. Originally inspired by FirePHP, WP Debug underwent a complete rewrite in its version 4.0, transforming it from ChromePHP to the modern Chrome Logger, in line with the latest Chrome extension guidelines. This change has ensured that it remains compatible with future versions of Chrome, thus retaining its value among users.

Key features that make WP Debug stand out include a native color picker for choosing colors, the use of the atob function for base 64 decoding, and support for console.table. Its tab switching logic has been improved, and the sticky behavior is now based on the host name. The extension also provides an options page with a unique style and color scheme, which has been appreciated by users.

User Reviews and Feedback

Despite the high aggregate rating of 3.98 out of 5, WordPress Debug (WP Debug) has its share of positive and negative user reviews. Rodolfo Nogueira commends the extension with a simple "Awesome!!", while Denis Matafonov considers it the best and only extension always enabled, alongside AdBlock.

However, some users have expressed issues with the extension. Vanco Ordanoski noted occasional functionality issues, such as "ghost" logs from previous logging attempts and the "Headers too big" error. Kostadi Bace pointed out the lack of logs from POST request responses with redirect headers. Similarly, OmniTax Biuro Rachunkowe found the need to keep clicking to expand arrays or objects annoying, suggesting the inclusion of an autoexpand feature. Mindy Baird struggled with generating a report, a concern echoed by some users.

Conclusion

In summary, the WordPress Debug (WP Debug) Chrome extension is a highly rated browser tool with a mix of reviews. Its unique features, such as the native color picker and support for console.table, make it stand out among other Chrome extensions for debugging purposes. However, it also presents some areas for improvement, such as enhancing its user interface and addressing the occasional functionality issues. Regardless, its high aggregate rating reflects its overall usefulness and the high regard users have for it.

It works only half of the time. It seems that some buffer doesn't get cleared between page refreshes and I get "ghost" logs from previous logging, or it doesn't work at all. Also, the infamous "Headers too big" error, where it doesn't even try show at least part of the messages. Looking for a new extension, or enough time to write my own. Stay away from it

Kostadi Bace

Liked, however it does not show the logs from POST requests which respond with redirect header (location: URL), so it misses logs.

OmniTax Biuro Rachunkowe

It would be very handy to add autoexpand to a plugin configuration (or in plugin switch). It's very annoying to keep clicking and clicking to expand, such as the contents of an array

This is extension has been unmaintained for years and has serious issues. Overall, this has done more harm than good for our team - we've tried to address several issues (we've sent several pull-requests to fix and enhance it) but the developer is completely unresponsive on all channels. Suggest you stay away - or be prepared for a lot of failure and frustration.

Mindy Baird

Have no clue how to get the report. Looks like others have the same issue, but no one replies to them. You'd get a lot more users if you could explain how to get to the report.

Rodolfo Nogueira

Awesome!!

Rui Rascasso

Not working as of version 65.0.3325.181 (Compilação oficial) (64 bits) (cohort: Stable).

- Debugging of PHP objects seems not to work in this version ("Error in event handler for runtime.onMessage: TypeError: Cannot read property 'match' of null") - Grouping seems not to work Both of these things worked previously.

Marshay Murray

I have no clue how to use it what so ever... any help?
